Mr President - O head of state1
I'm writing you a letter that my kids have forgotten about me
It's about my son Karel and my younger daughter Eva
They haven't written for a year, they haven't come to visit for a year

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square2

Mr President, and I also complain
that they've increased the price of my beer, my yoghurt, my sausages and my trams
And postage stamps and notepads
Even veal shoulder, Greece, and Germany - simply everything

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

Mr President, of my Czech republic
They let me go for an hour from my factory
For thirty years, everything was fine
Now new young people have arrived, and they're running it here like it's solitaire

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

Mr President - if my Anežka was live
Then she'd probably kill me for letter I'm writing now
they'd say: Jaromír, you're behaving like a little kid
Don't you know what worries he has with Europe and with space and everything?

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

O Mr President

  • 1. Difficult to translate ústavní činitel - literal meaning agent/executor/official of the constitution but translated like this so it makes sense in English and with 'O' to preserve the use of the vocative case
  • 2. During the Velvet Revolution, people jangled their keys during protests as a symbol for the government that it was time to go, and also the opening of doors

Celebration

It's a celebration in the village, a big celebration for the bride
Who, after sixteen years, is finally getting married
In her wedding dress, how beautiful the young girl is
Her mother looks at her and, crying, takes joy in it
The grandfather says to the grandmother, amidst all the joy:
'My little granddaughter looks just like you!'
Between stairs and steps, the bride struts
Making everyone envious who still doesn’t have a fiancé

The village square is full of relatives
Some came by mule, others by donkey
They comfort the mother who is crying freely:
'A daughter at sixty has to get married'
There are tears in the church, as if a tragedy happened
The mother says to everyone: 'They've stolen my daughter!'
It’s time to say 'yes,' 'but what is he doing? Why isn’t he speaking?'
People are amazed, but the groom can’t speak
Because everyone forgot that he’s mute
Because everyone forgot that he’s mute
Because everyone forgot that he’s mute
Because everyone forgot that he’s mute

Sicilian honor

Sicilian
Sicilian
The honor I gave you is Sicilian
There is no wealth that can buy it

When she came to the village
She was a lost woman
People avoided her on the street
But I said to her, 'Love, my love'
She looked me straight in the eyes
Slowly, I took her to my home
After so much mud and dirt
She stayed there
And forgot about her tragic story

After two years, without saying goodbye
She returned to the mud, trampling my honor
What a disaster has fallen upon me
A street woman, without dignity
What is this life of mine?
I no longer have friends, honor... and not even you!

We are not like you

With your hatred
This world will end
In death, in pain
In terror, it will collapse
There will be no more life
But those like us

For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you

You say we are crazy
For our hair
But you don't realize
That there is no reason
To give us so much hatred
And so much cruelty

For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you

If one day you'll understand
That this is not right
For sure, you'll cry
For this society
For all this evil
That you did to us

For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you
For sure, we are not like you

Freedom

Freedom
In the sky
And within the stars
Freedom
A flower
In your hair
And within your heart
The freedom that is love
The love you give me
And I will shout to the sky
That I am alive
I will tell others
That I color myself
With your love
With the love you give me
That you give me
With your voice
With your hands
And with your warmth
You are a star
And you will guide me
And I, like a man
Will love you
Forever, that’s how I’ll be
And you, who run
For the infinite
Will point to me
The new light with your finger
And I will see you
