Some Advice to Those Who Will Serve Time in Prison

If instead of being hanged by the neck
you're thrown inside
for not giving up hope
in the world, your country, your people,
if you do ten or fifteen years
apart from the time you have left,
you won't say,
'Better I had swung from the end of a rope
like a flag' -
You'll put your foot down and live.
It may not be a pleasure exactly,
but it's your solemn duty
to live one more day
to spite the enemy.

Part of you may live alone inside,
like a tone at the bottom of a well.
But the other part
must be so caught up
in the flurry of the world
that you shiver there inside
when outside, at forty days' distance, a leaf moves.
To wait for letters inside,
to sing sad songs,
or to lie awake all night staring at the ceiling
is sweet but dangerous.

Look at your face from shave to shave,
forget your age,
watch out for lice
and for spring nights,
and always remember
to eat every last piece of bread-
also, don't forget to laugh heartily.
And who knows,
the woman you love may stop loving you.
Don't say it's no big thing:
it's like the snapping of a green branch
to the man inside.
To think of roses and gardens inside is bad,
to think of seas and mountains is good.
Read and write without rest,
and I also advise weaving
and making mirrors.
I mean, it's not that you can't pass
ten or fifteen years inside
and more -
you can,
as long as the jewel
on the left side of your chest doesn't lose it's luster!

Beaucoup De Bruit Pour Rien

The tide falls and rises
Stirring uneasiness within my chest

The time for the tide's turn has surely come
For this debt of faces and names
Should have washed my hands clean
From this trading of flattery and grudges

The truth at the corner of my eyes (Don't show your tears)
Is just worldly worries best left unspoken (Nothing but fleeting whims)

Nothing but a well-deserved retribution
Just the repayment of all the animosity and interests
It's the punishment for getting my hands dirty
In this game of trade of favors and feuds

The impulse of betrayal (Please don't ask me by the nape)
Is just an autumn night's love sickness (Farewell to all this debauchery)

Will I rise or will I sink?
The Tokyo Harbor stays silent
If I don't run, I'll be caught,
Aah, I'm gasping for breath.

Your smile is so dazzling
Like one last glance through the drizzling rain

Swallowing bubbles and then blowing them out
It's nothing but a high-stakes gambler's scheme
If the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka is nothing but a moult
Kioicho is just an empty name
Blowing a kiss to the era that gradually fades out
Saying 'thanks for your patronage' just like the old times
I shall have no use for that Exit 8
From that Tameike-Sannō station anymore.

The tide falls and rises
Stirring uneasiness within my chest
The tide falls and rises
Stirring uneasiness within my chest

Forget me

I let you see everything
From my soul
You entered, you took the best part
And you left, you didn't look back
At what you destroyed exactly like a storm

So throw me away
Into a forgotten corner of the night
Come on, forget me
If your heart is capable
Of pretending, erase me already
Exactly like a mistake
Come on, forget me
And in one or two lives maybe
I will forget you too

Yesterday I teleported
About two summers ago
It was so sunny in our world
What I thought would last a lifetime
You killed with a heart of ice

So throw me away
Into a forgotten corner of the night
Come on, forget me
If your heart is capable
Of pretending, erase me already
Exactly like a mistake
Come on, forget me
And in one or two lives maybe
I will forget you too

You don't know the word 'longing'
While I feel like I am dying again
You make it seem so easy

So throw me away
Into a forgotten corner of the night
Come on, forget me
If your heart is capable
Of pretending, erase me already
Exactly like a mistake
Come on, forget me
And in one or two lives maybe
I will forget you too.

Mercy [Look Down (Paris)]

[LOS MENDIGOS]
Mercy, for God's sake, and look at their feet!
Mercy, any good deed will do!
Mercy, for God's sake, the dregs of Paris!
Mercy, mercy, they ask for compassion!

[GAVROCHE]
Hello, how are you? I am Gavroche.
These are my people and this is my home.
It isn't very pretty, as you can see.
There is nothing of any interest.
Today we fight for a typical loaf of bread
Before, it was for liberty
The fact is that we all die equally
That is what equality is
Your end is brutal!
Long live France! Long live France!

[LOS MENDIGOS]
Mercy, any good deed will do!
Mercy, mercy, we ask for compassion!

[MARIUS]
Those brave men, where are they?
Who decides to fight?

[ENJOLRAS]
There is only one man, and he is Lamarque
Let him speak for everyone else.

[LOS MENDIGOS]
Give us something to eat, please.
Take care of your fellow man in the name of the Lord.
In God's name!
Of the Lord, of the Lord, of the Lord...

[MARIUS]
Lamarque is waning and he will die
How long does he have to live?

[ENJOLRAS]
There is so much rage in the country,
It is like lava in a volcano.
Who can lead the battalion?
Who is going to call for a rebellion?

[GAVROCHE]
There goes Old Thenardier
All of his people are the same
He had problems with the law
He is a real pig.
He is the head of his clan, he is a dirty thief
He even has his daughter involved
It is Eponine, she knows what's going on
She is very tough to fool
Who cares? What's the point?
To live, to live!

[LOS MENDIGOS]
Mercy, any good deed will do!
Mercy, mercy, we ask for compassion!

Song of Joy

I'll rise early with the sun,
Put on a new dress,
Create a song of joy
And go out into the open field.

I will sing a song of joy
To Mother Earth in the field -
Thick rye will start putting forth ears,
And my little song is simple:

Glory to the red sun! Glory to the pure water!
Glory to the free wind! Glory to every living thing!

To the white cloud in the sky
I'll sing a song of joy.
It will pour down with rain
As a sign of its gratitude.

I'll sing a song of joy
To the thick birch grove.
The birds will start singing back...
There's no secret in my song:

Glory to the red sun! Glory to the pure water!
Glory to the free wind! Glory to every living thing!

To my dear, dear friend
I'll sing a song of joy,
And we'll live in love
Peace, harmony and kindness.

Glory to the red sun! Glory to the pure water!
Glory to the free wind! Glory to every living thing!
