Full Throttle

He sits on the sidewalk with an ice-lolly stick
Scratching the ground-up poodle meat out of the grooves of his radial tyres
Yes! He's careful with his Polo!
She rolls her hips and coos
Shall we walk or go by foot?
No dear, he says disgruntled
We're going to Gilze-Rije1
Full throttle

On the lies lies a toddler who
Whilst fleeing from mother
Scratches
Upon Mercedes-diesel
Grim boys, those taxi drivers
Full throttle

The toddler [?]
The Mercedes not
That'll be brawling!
Full throttle

During the winter, stealing petrol with cold claws
Stealing the winter
Sobbing, tears, sadness
Transport
Full throttle

Thirty-seven years ago
Born in Amsterdam, I
Full throttle
Joined the resistance
I smuggled ivory to England
Phyllis, she was called
I, Civillis, never again2
I never play billiards no more
I...
Full throttle

Upturned collar
White, white is shirt
And there his light-metal prosthetic already shines
Behind retreated lips
Suspenders for your life

Then simply, then simply!
Then simply bankrupt, sighs the judge in resting
Full throttle

Upturned collar
I'm too whacky today
Just walking through town stamping my feet
With Boney-M, live, on TV
Nine-nine-nine
Six-six-six
The Devil's number
That's a letdown, oh yes!
Poor-as-steel's my name
Full throttle

A cock in the city of lights
A phallus at Philips
An erection in Eindhoven
Full throttle
Throttle

There walks a couple, retired
There a punk on rollerblades
There a slave in a crawling harness
A petty thief feeds pigeons at Dam Square3
Pedestrians, cars, waiting for their colour
Then nought but silence!

Pigeons
Crumbs
Thieves!
Bitterly the vehicular fleet lays silent
Full throttle

The door for prams
And the disabled is locked
At the Bijenkorf4
I however do find one on the second5:
A pram
The mother has utilised the crowding
Off she's gone
Full throttle

How much does that child cost?
I'll need to ask, sir
Says the acne-ridden saleswoman
Full throttle
Throttle

It's raining
It pipes rain-stalks
It steals the drainpipes
It's raining pipe stems6
Full throttle

Full throttle
Full throttle

  • 1. Town in North-Brabant. The latter name of the town sounds like 'rijden' (to drive). The sentence can be interpreted as 'We're going to drive to Gilze', or simply as 'We're going to Gilze-Rije'.
  • 2. Civillis refers to Julius Civillis, leader of the Batavian revolts against Roman overlordship. The line can be interpreted as 'I, Civillis' or 'I see Phyllis' in both Dutch and English, thus leading to the double translation of either 'I [was called] Civillis - Never again' or 'I don't see Phyllis anymore'.
  • 3. Translation loses irony: A 'kruimeldief' (lit.: crumbs-thief) translates as petty thief. The irony lies in him supposedly stealing crumbs to get by, yet feeding them to the pigeons instead.
  • 4. Dutch shopping emporium.
  • 5. Second storey
  • 6. Whilst the idiom translates as 'It's raining cats and dogs', the rhyming here hinges on swapping the individual bits of the idiom around, hence why it's translated literally.

REBORN

Tears dissolve under the rain, wandering on the path of rebirth beyond the pain.

Can you hear cry your heart?
Let me hear cry your soul!
No pain! no gain! Don't fear.

Unable to look ahead, stopped and blocked by fake days, a facade of 'once more dice.'

Can you hear cry your heart?
Let me hear cry your soul!
No pain! no gain! Don't fear.

The reality soaked in the rotten rain is still a false breakdown.
This pain will eventually turn into a white future.
With a soul that needs no adornment, dye my heart and find me.
Livin' on the chaos.

Can you hear cry your heart?
Let me hear cry your soul!
No pain! no gain! Don't fear.

If you're afraid of the past and not seeking ahead, it won’t begin – a cloudy smile.
With this sorrow in my chest, toward the sky where light shines.
With a soul that knows no fear, open your eyes and find me.

Livin' on the chaos.

The rain wets my eyelids, showing the path ahead of pain as I walk the path of rebirth.

Mayfly

I think you were sometimes an egoist.
The smell of cigarettes and those words still linger in the classroom.

I can't throw away this dark past.
I can't throw away this terrifying present.

Why did you disappear?
That psychopathic smile of yours...
Why must the life of a mayfly be short?
Why did you disappear?
That psychopathic smile of yours...

You're always there in my memories and in my heart, I won't forget.
Even if my heart hurts,
Even if I feel the lessons,
I’m happy for the things you left behind.

Why did you disappear?
Why did you disappear?

The smell of cigarettes and those words still linger in the classroom.
Sleep peacefully, I’ll leave it to you.
I’ll carry your thoughts with me.

fu uh

Still, I haven't given up. Is it the same for you?

I think the world is small.

No matter how dark the place is, I can hear the music. In the attic with my eyes closed, I feel you.

Hoo~

Can you sleep tonight? I want to see you.

A necklace shining around your neck.

The things you gave me.

Suddenly, I think like this: I like the air outside, swaying. Even though there's a different, opposite side of me, I feel hope.

Hoo~

I'll stay in my heart.

-045-

In front of the phone, I was searching for words
I just wanted to say one word, 'Congratulations'
The love that disappeared last year
Your birthday

Gently, 045
Just the area code
I dialed and placed the receiver
But no, tears started to overflow right away

A quiet dream, you told me about it
The café on the hill overlooking Marine Tower
The seasons slowly
Melt away like water

Gently, 045
I entwined my fingers and walked
The mirage-like hill
The foreign ships swaying in the blurred sea

Gently, 045
Someday, to you
I want to smile
And say thank you from the bottom of my heart
