A song about the Civil War
Barbed wire fences,skinny like sticks,
prisoners were put to dig.
They were dark times,
it was troubling,
it was kept forgotten for years.
A Red could be identified by the armbands,
fighting with handguns,
no coffin boards,
iron nails,
the mass graves were kept silent.
And we came from the west,
I put a spruce coniferous on my hat,
following First Lieutenant Melin,
I seized Hämeenkatu,
I saw men at the Näsijärvi,
they skied a trail across the lake,
now that there's nothing left,
smoke rises out of crushed bricks.
Now a peacemonger is needed,
we don't need a stirrer,
to forge plows out of swords,
sometimes it's far too cold out here.
The war that we carry inside us,
for generations boys get it from their fathers,
hired men and masters fight back tears when they miss their mother. (MOM!)
'Don't cry over your lost son, mother,
even if your only shelter has been torn from you.
So cast aside your worries,
put away your wishes,
all of it into oblivion,
and wait until we meet in the eternity.'
And then came peace,
but for too long they were taken behind saunas,
there were old grudges,
red bands,
this is a land of mass graves.
Came beatings,
groups of bandits with shooting irons,
white terror,
red terror,
a land at stake.
I got a shotgun from the community hall,
I got an armband,
it was wet,
I saw Golgotha on Kalevankangas,
it took too long,
I was hungry,
there was oppression,
there was an oppressor,
it rained sleet in the bullet rain,
at Sorinahde we were in a pinch,
and my pulse beat like a piston.
What kind of song will be sung,
what will it look like when we open our eyes,
what does it feel like when weapons are fired,
and men go down like hay?
What does it look like when you watch from afar,
what does it feel like when your child is buried,
what do we all hush about,
and keep silent?
'Don't cry over your lost son, mother,
even if your only shelter has been torn from you.
So cast aside your worries,
put away your wishes,
all of it into oblivion,
and wait until we meet in the eternity.'
Goodbye father, mother too and brothers, my sister,
I won't see you anymore even if I wished it so.
You can't know when the time comes and the night arrives,
life is dream and the work lapses.
