The White Worm

The high pastures belonging to Mittelwald in the upper Eisack Valley were an uncanny place in old days. No one wanted to go there any longer, for the place was full of venomous worms1 the worms were as thick and long as the beam of a hay-wain. Did anyone chance to wander up there, they were instantly devoured. The village got no benefit from the high pastures, indeed they feared that the serpents might come down as well, for now and then even from Mittelwald their horrible whistling could be heard.
 

There came one day a little man from foreign parts, and when he heard of the dreadful worms, he engaged himself for a great sum of money to stamp them out all the people needed to do, he said, was stack up wood for a great bonfire near the pastures. But if there was a white snake among the worms, he could do nothing, and they had best tell him of it right from the start.
 

However, no one had seen a white snake. So the little man went up and many villagers followed him. When the wood was blazing, he began to conjure. Then the pastures came to life, a rustling approached through the dry grass, eerie whistling was heard, and as if flying through the air the worms shot into the fire! They thrashed madly in the flames until they were dead.
 

All at once the people heard a hair-raising hissing from above them in the pass, quite different from the whistling of the other worms, and as fast as a storm-wind a white worm, terrible in form and size, shot toward them and right at the stranger, and as the little man, full of horror, with the cry 'I am doomed!' threw himself into the fire, the worm writhed after him and was burned up as well.
