The Dance of the Tatzelwurm

In the time when a mountain lake, clear and big
Was still flowing in the depths of these valleys,
In great splendour here
I have lived, loved and dragoned1
As a Tatzlwurm2.
 
From the Pendling to the Wendelstein
Rock and air and water were mine.
I flew, I walked and lay in a roll,
instead of hay I slept on gold
As a Tatzlwurm.
 
Horny was my scaled body
And fire-spitting was my pastime
And everything that crawled up the mountain,
I blew away and ate it up.

But when I forgot my manners so much
